Sebastien Tellier – La Ritournelle (The Remixes)

There’s no overstating the effect that Tellier’s instant classic, “La Ritournelle”, has had on people over the last decade. Featuring Afrobeat’s inventor Tony Allen on drums it was aptly described by NME as “basically Unfinished Sympathy Pt. 2” and it is now being re-released with brand new mixes from Lucky Number affiliated acts to close out our 10 year anniversary as a label.

Remixing a true classic is a daunting task but it is a testament to the song’s timelessness that these mixes draw new life from the track. Chicago-born/New York-based production duo Gilligan Moss, take the track on a spun-out journey that involves and overwhelms the listener with suspense and then delivers nothing short of drop everything ecstasy once those recognizable vocals appear. In addition, our latest signing, London-based Our Mother, infuse their unique baroque video-game aesthetic into the track, whilst Leicester’s champion beat sculptor FTSE demonstrates a surprising subtlety in gothic groove. These three new remixes sit alongside the classic pop précis from Mr. Dan and the glorious original upon the EP.  The EP is to be re-released on May 27th but you can pre-order now.

Our Mother – Age Of Empirez

Our Mother release their debut EP A.O.B. on 29th April 2016 and today the band shares their EP’s opening track, ‘Age of Empirez‘.

Deeply atmospheric and emanating with the youthful nostalgia that comes with the game of the same name, ‘Age of Empirez’ subtly nods to Age of Adz-era Sufjan Stevens while remaining rooted in the self-recorded sounds (of an airplane, in this case) and disparate elements that end up lifting the band’s songs to otherworldly places.

To celebrate the EP’s release, the band will play a show at London’s The Waiting Room on 3 May. Tickets are available here. A.O.B. EP can be pre-ordered digitally from iTunes or on limited, heavyweight vinyl via Rough Trade. Watch the previously shared video for ‘Surprise Machine’ (as premiered on NOWNESShere.

Our Mother – Surprise Machine Video

Our Mother  release their debut EP A.O.B. on 29th April 2016 and today the band have premiered the video for ‘Surprise Machine’ with Nowness.

Directed by Josh Fletcher and Max Smith, the stunning clip beautifully visualizes the song, which is itself packed with Eno-esque ambience and myriad horns backed by digital horsepower. Joseph Charlton of Our Mother says of the video: “What we’d seen of Max’s before we really liked. He’s got a kind of Scandi-aesthetic — the look is quite cold and clear but there’s some latent menace too. We also wanted something relatively playful, which has come off really well in the end product.”

Co-director Fletcher adds: “Speaking with the band we were keen to make something that felt unapologetically from the British Isles and to explore the idea of tradition vs our modern way of life. With the repetition of the ‘its happening again’ line in the chorus and the bass pulsating away throughout the song, we immediately saw the potential to show this quite normal suburban existence, seemingly on repeat.”
