Charly Bliss – Young Enough video

Today NYC’s Charly Bliss (Eva Hendricks, Sam Hendricks, Spencer Fox and Dan Shure) share an incredible video for “Young Enough”, the title track from their critically acclaimed second album. Directed by Henry Kaplan, the video perfectly compliments the emotionally charged single.

Of the video, Eva says, “This video is so magical and unlike anything we’ve ever made before. I told (director) Henry Kaplan that I was feeling inspired by the video for Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush, and he took that initial idea and made something totally beautiful and unique that’s as cinematic and sentimental as the song.

Despite the fact that this video looks so dreamlike and serene, it was very physically draining to make. The entire crew and anyone who wasn’t in a given shot had to sprint behind the steadicam op so that they wouldn’t be seen and ruin the effect of the giant open field where we were shooting. Between that, the choreography, racing to utilize available daylight, speeding up and slowing down the track to achieve the slow-motion and fast-motion effects, and trying to get perfect, full takes because there’s so few cuts, this was an extremely challenging video to make, but for that reason it’s also our favourite.

Eva says about the track, “For so many reasons, “Young Enough” is the centrepiece of this album. This is a song about perspective, nostalgia and growing up. The first time that I fell in love it was tumultuous and frustrating, but I think all of the endless drama made me believe that it was “worth it.” Sort of like the Twilight-movie trope that relationships that are the most painful are the most romantic. Instead of writing about it through the lens of anger and frustration, I wanted to write a song that was really honest about the fact that I really loved this person, and regardless of how messy it was and how immature we both were, I was both grateful for the experience but also grateful that I’ve grown up and out of believing that being in love should be so hard.

Charly Bliss are back in the UK and Europe this November, including a show at London’s Scala. All tour dates and ticket links on their website.

Charly Bliss – Hard To Believe

Following a series of packed shows at this year’s SXSW, NYC’s Charly Bliss (Eva Hendricks, Sam Hendricks, Spencer Fox and Dan Shure) have shared the video for the anthemic “Hard To Believe”, the third single and an undoubted highlight from their anticipated new album, Young Enough – which you can pre-order now.

While the video is a playful homage to A Perfect Circle’s “Judith”, of the song and video Eva says: “Hard to Believe” is a song about being addicted to a bad relationship, and the endless cycle of trying and failing to end one. Sam wrote the guitar riff very early on in the writing process of Young Enough and we’ve always been obsessed with playing it because it’s so insanely catchy.

We shot the video on 35mm film over two days with our close friend Henry Kaplan 24 hours after returning from SXSW. Henry did a spectacular job of incorporating each of our personalities into this video, as well as providing a slightly fantastical, but ultimately realistic portrayal of a typical band practice. While we’re running songs, each band-member usually has their own inner-monologue running of either things they’re distracted by, or things they’d rather be doing. This video feels extremely “us” and I don’t think we could have made it with anyone else

Middle Kids – Real Thing

Middle Kids (Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz) have announced that they will release a six-track mini-album entitled New Songs For Old Problems on May 24th, 2019. To celebrate the announcement, the band have shared a new single and video Real Thing.  A soaring anthemic track, Real Thing ruminates on our “lifelong quest for meaning”, says Hannah. “It’s the quiet, persistent voice in the stillness that constantly checks to see if you truly think you’ve found the thing you’re looking for.” Watch the Marie Pangaud directed clip now.

The mini-album, recorded at the band’s own studio in Sydney and produced by Tim Fitz, follows hot on the heels of what was a massive 2018 for Middle Kids and the May release of their critically acclaimed debut album Lost Friends. The band toured the world, including UK and European dates with Bloc Party and a sold out show at London’s Village Underground, as well as performing on several US TV shows including Conan, Jimmy Kimmel andThe Late Late Show with James Corden.

Charly Bliss – Chatroom

Today, NYC’s Charly Bliss (Eva Hendricks, Sam Hendricks, Spencer Fox and Dan Shure) have shared a video for “Chatroom” the second single from their highly anticipated new album, Young Enough (available for pre-order now and due out May 10th).

Of the song Hendricks says “I was sexually assaulted by someone I dated and I wrote ‘Chatroom’, and most of Young Enough, as a way of processing that experience and explaining it to myself. ‘Chatroom’ is a song about reaching ecstatic joy through consuming rage. Simply put, it’s a colossal ‘fuck you’ and a celebration of reaching the point of a ‘fuck you’ that isn’t diluted by self-blame or apologies.

I feel so lucky to have worked with Maegan Houang on this video. I felt an immediate sense of mutual trust, and she produced a treatment that directly addresses the themes of trauma, misogyny and mind control without resorting to a literal representation of the lyrics. It’s tonally the darkest video we’ve ever made, and I think it anchors the intent of song which might otherwise be obscured by the fact that it’s also our most direct foray into larger-than-life pop music.”
