Walt Disco – Always Sickening + You Don’t Have To Say…

Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Unlearning, Walt Disco today announce a series of covers of their favourite artists, due to form the Always Sickening EP out November 25th. The first cover, released today, is a thundering, gothic take on the Dusty Springfield classic “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me“. The EP also includes covers of Aldous Harding, The Japanese House, The Associates and Stephanie Mills.

Walt Disco - You Don't Have to Say You Love Me

Walt Disco on the EP; “We chose each song for their intrinsic charm and motherly guiding quality. We see this in the confident proclamation in ‘Never Knew Love Like This Before’, the thankless devotion of ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, the shady commentary on the bourgeois in ‘Club Country’ by our heroes The Associates, the tenderness of ‘Saw You in a Dream’, and the bizarre world of Aldous Harding’s ‘The Barrel’. Each song has a strong sense of emotion and self, which we strive for in our own music. We had a lot of fun working on these covers, both in forming our own interpretations and in recording it ourselves in our wee studio.”

Walt Disco on covering “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”: “Whilst deciding on which songs to cover for this EP, as soon as this tune entered the conversation, we knew we had to do it. Recording our take on that massive and marvellously dramatic intro was one of the most exciting moments we’ve had recording together. The emotion of this song really connects with us too. This message of love and understanding that, although it may ultimately be unreciprocated, you’re still willing to take any small piece of this person they can spare for you. It’s incredibly poignant, and we feel we’ve preserved that feeling while putting our own edge on this classic.”

Unlearning is out now, and is currently nominated for the AIM Independent Album of the Year award and the SAY Award (Scottish Album of the Year).

Walt Disco – Remixes

Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Unlearning, Glasgow’s Walt Disco today share a series of remixes from their favourite queer artists. The first is from musical maverick Lynks, who unleashes a fresh dose of underground club energy on the hyperpop-influenced “Hold Yourself As High As Her”, out now. DJ and producer TAAHLIAH’s take on “Macilent” and frequent Walt Disco collaborator BOBBIE’s version of “Selfish Lover”, each follow on July 15 and July 29.

Of the remixes, Walt Disco say “We’re extremely excited and honoured to be presenting these remixes, crafted by some of our most revered queer artists we have the pleasure of knowing. They’ve each lent their talent and individuality to reimagining three of our beloved songs. Lynks, with their ferocious flavour and unmistakable presence. The iconic TAAHLIAH, a modern legend in our eyes, with her unrelenting approach and attitude. And BOBBY, who’s musical intuition and meticulous craft never fails to leave us awe-struck. We hope you love these as much as we do.

Walt Disco – Unlearning + Be An Actor Video

Following Friday’s release of their critically acclaimed debut album Unlearning, Glasgow’s Walt Disco today share the enchanting video for new single “Be An Actor“. The song, about a long-distance romance shared by frontperson James Potter during lockdown, is equal parts hopeful and heartbreaking. “We never met, but spent our conversations daydreaming of what could be, painting pictures of romance, a fantasy that I could run away somewhere and fall in love,” they share. “The verses tell of how we shared in self discovery and lent courage to each other, assuring ourselves that these changes are the start of a hopeful future”.

The video, created by Eric J Liddle and Kasparas Vidunas of Humble Film Productions, features a series of charming, dreamlike sets crafted by miniature artist Chell Young. The band was filmed against green screen backdrops and meticulously inserted into their new tiny, whimsical world. Throughout the video, scale and direction make less and less sense as the world becomes more surreal and unfastened from reality.

Unlearning is out now – buy/listen HERE – and comes hot on the heels of a riotous run at SXSW, with their debut US performances dazzling fans and US critics alike and garnering acclaim from Rolling Stone, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, Austin Chronicle and more.

The breathtaking debut is steeped in metamorphoses, a stage show in two acts. It covers flings and romances, identities and bodies and change, profound familial love, and – of course – Hollywood glamour. While the themes of the album are universally relatable, Walt Disco’s gift is in the unique experience of discovery and heartbreak between queer people. In Walt Disco’s eyes, it’s never too late to become what you might have been and there are plenty of possibilities to explore on Unlearning.

Reviews are flooding in for the debut album and the band have received high praise from the likes of The Telegraph, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, DIY, The Skinny and many more:

Walt Disco – Unlearning & How Cool Are You?

Glasgow’s Walt Disco today announce their upcoming debut album Unlearning, to be released on April 1st. The breathtaking debut is steeped in metamorphoses, a stage show in two acts. It covers flings and romances, identities and bodies and change, profound familial love, and – of course – Hollywood glamour. The album plays out like a musical, with an emotional arc and even an instrumental interlude, winkingly titled ‘The Costume Change’. Pre-order/pre-save HERE.

Brand-new single ‘How Cool Are You?’, also released today, shines with ease; a stomping live anthem and fan favourite after the band’s run of sold-out UK dates last autumn – the track prances and parades its way through three minutes of glaring pop pomposity. For the video, the band joined up once again with Eric J Liddle and Kasparas Vidunas of Humble Film Productions. The band shares, “This time we wanted to slip into our skates and paint the rink all the colours of the rainbow, flying in the face of the pouting ‘cool crew’ and showing that coolness shouldn’t come at the cost of having fun and accepting yourself!”

Walt Disco - How Cool Are You?

The new track is the fourth to be taken from the upcoming debut album, following the thundering and highly emotive singles Macilent, ‘Weightless’ and ‘Selfish Lover’ released in 2021. While the themes of the album are universally relatable, Walt Disco’s gift is in the unique experience of discovery and heartbreak between queer people – something that frontperson James explores in depth on songs such as ‘Weightless’, ‘Be An Actor’ and ‘Hold Yourself As High As Her’. In Walt Disco’s eyes, it’s never too late to become what you might have been and there are plenty of possibilities to explore on Unlearning.

Following a flurry of hyped gigs across the UK this year the band have also just announced their biggest UK and European tour to date for next spring, including London’s Scala, Paradiso in Amsterdam and ending at Point Ephemere in Paris – tickets are on sale now.

Walt Disco – Macilent

Glasgow’s Walt Disco today shared ‘Macilent’, continuing their run of thundering, highly emotive singles coupled with stunning visuals. Speaking on the new track, frontperson James explains that “‘Macilent’ was written with Jessica Winter in August the day after the 3 trans women were attacked in Hollywood. All we could think about that day was the violence that trans and queer people face every-day. We wanted the song to convey the fear that we feel, the disgust, the exhaustion, but also the fading hope that it doesn’t have to be the way things are ‘We could be together, if you weren’t so violent’. ‘We’ve been around forever’ is almost a war-cry exclaiming that queer people and gender identities have always existed outside the binary.”.

The ‘Macilent’ video was directed by Eric J Liddle and Kasparas Vidunas and the release is also accompanied by the announcement of a UK and European tour for next spring including a show at London’s Scala – check dates below, tickets are on sale Friday Nov 12th at 10am. The 2022 tour comes after riotous shows this year at TRNSMT Festival and Dot To Dot as well as support dates for Duran Duran and an autumn UK headline tour.
